If I use the the Win 10 DVD image created with the MS media creation tool, I am pretty sure that the Dell activation process wont work and I will have to purchase a Win 10 license from Microsoft. You can boot from the Dell DVD or USB, select troubleshoot, and then reset my PC.Reset my PC gives you the options to preserve your data files (but not applications) or wipe everything.I tried doing a reset with keep files on a laptop, and it saw my existing Win 7 image as a target, but something failed and it quit before making any changes.
Dell Latitude 10 License From MicrosoftOn this machine I didnt want to loose files so I didnt try the option to replace everything. Dell installs Win 10 using UEFI boot and I think GPT partitions. I dont know if this means that I can only do a destructive upgrade from Win 7. I took an older dell machine, tried installing Dell from the Windows 10 recovery media, but it couldnt even find a drive. I used the Microsoft Windows 10 DVD (created with Microsofts Win 10 media creation tool) and installed Win 10. I then tried a reset install using the Dell media- this time it saw the disk, but the reset failed. I upgrade from a Windows 7 to Windows 10 all the time with no issues using the Media Creation Tool provided by Windows. You will need a different ISO for each model of PC however you dont need different ISOs for reach Service tag, so download it once and you will be all set. Dell Latitude 10 License Key OffAfter you install Windows 10 it will automatically pull the Windows License Key off of the Motherboard BIOS so no need to have a key to type in either. What you can do in this instance is get a hold of a Windows 10 ISO and from the Windows 7 desktop, pop in the disk and run the setup.exe. ![]() Dell Latitude 10 Update Use MicrosoftsFor those type of update use Microsofts Win 10 media creation tool rather than Dells as it will support the upgrade option and bit just the reimagining option. But you want to have Windows 10 to be installed under UEFI because it protects you from malware. Then lets say you went ahead and installed Windows 10 upgrade and it installed under legacy mode - you might have problems with Windows Backup. If you created an image and try to do a system image restore - you might have problems. Its probably better off to backup the files and do a clean install of Windows 10 under UEFI boot mode. I think it is the same as the Windows 10 recovery disk that Dell includes with some systems anyway. I think in the days of XP, the Dell CD MAY have indicated specific models. I booted from the DVD burned from the Dell ISO image, but I realized that even if I could reset while keeping files this was still a reinstall NOT an upgrade. Not worth it. There is not setup.exe on the DVD, so I cant run the install from win Windows. With Windows 7, the Dell installer looked for a Dell vendor string in the BIOS as well as a SLIC version - if the slic version was recent enough, you could install Windows from the Dell CD wo additional activation. I dont know how activation works with Win 10 but I assume something similar.
